Why consider an alternative to traditional chemical water treatment?

  • To substantially reduce or eliminate the cost of water treatment chemicals and their associated costs for insurance, storage, handling and disposal
  • To reduce the amount of water used in open cooling water operation and the associated cost for supply and discharge
  • To eliminate discharge of toxic chemicals
  • To facilitate EPA & OSHA compliance by eliminating chemicals
  • To treat water for applications where the use of chemicals is either too costly or the application itself prohibits their use
  • To descale systems, which have lost efficient heat transfer, without the need for rodding or acid cleaning
  • Eliminate algae and bacteria, including difficult problems such as yeast and Legionella, by the use of the simple and very effective Ion Generator.

How is it possible to protect your water handling systems without the use of chemicals?

  • The Descal-A-Matic non-chemical water treatment system has proven over the past 30 years that physics can be used to accomplish many of the water treatment requirements previously thought to be provided only by chemical injection.
  • The use of the laws of physics to induce a change in the crystalline structure of calcium carbonate from the naturally occurring calcite (hard scale) form to the aragonite (soft talc) form has been in continual use in Russia for decades and in the U.S. for more than 40 years.
  • The physical process used to cause this change in crystalline structure is provided by the use of magnetic induction fields, which when exposed to moving water, interacts with the water's electric dipole moment and applies a torque to the water molecule.
  • The subsequent down stream effect of these coherently-oriented water molecules provides the electric potential which supplies the energy necessary to form the more complex crystalline form of calcium carbonate, called aragonite.
  • When aragonite precipitates, it is easily filtered or will settle in low velocity areas to be removed during normal maintenance.
  • The aragonite talc also provides an excellent corrosion barrier for pipes and other surfaces.
  • The use of the an ionization unit (the Ion Generator)  to control micro-biological contamination, even difficult types such as yeast and Legionella, completes the system for open cooling operations.
  • The size of the Ion Generator micro-biological control units used in recirculating systems is based upon the volume of water in the system, the rate of evaporation, the water chemistry (conductivity) and the total resistance in the Ionizer II system. The Ion Generator is not typically used in closed-loop applications.

Which applications are appropriate for Descal-A-Matic water treatment systems?

  • The use of the Descal-A-Matic non-chemical water treatment system can be found in a wide variety of industrial applications. The most popular application of this equipment, and the one which provides the best return of initial investment, is for cooling towers and evaporative condensers.
  • Other uses of this equipment are for boilers, heat exchangers, vacuum pumps, hot or chilled water-closed loops, straight-through systems such as main line installation for office buildings, factories, hotels or agricultural drip systems.
  • In hot water or low pressure steam boilers used to heat buildings via recirculating hot water, the Descal-A-Matic should be installed in a by-pass around the pump and sized to between 5% and 7.5% of the maximum gpm capacity of the hot water circulating pump. Except for leakage, the system is "closed". Purge the system for a few seconds weekly to keep the water color"clear".
  • This system will operate with source water having pH levels from 6.5 to 10.5. Total Dissolved Solids may be from less than 100ppm to 2,000 ppm. Recirculating waters may run TDS levels of 2,300ppm or 3,450 micromhos without any special consideration. Considerably higher levels have been achieved under well supervised conditions.
  • The flow rate of the application and the water chemistry of the source water will determine the unit required to control scale and corrosion for a straight-through application.
  • The total volume of water in a recirculating application and the water chemistry of the source water will determine the unit required to control scale and corrosion.
  • The Descal-A-Matic fluid conditioner will operate efficiently in boilers at temperatures of up to 425º Fahrenheit and up to 180psi operating pressure.
